The Olleros – Chavín Trek is one of the classic long-distance routes in the Cordillera Blanca, offering a unique combination of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and high-altitude adventure. Following ancient pathways once used by Andean communities, the trek traverses remote mountain terrain, crosses dramatic passes, and passes through pristine landscapes rarely visited by large groups of tourists.
Over eight days, trekkers experience the incredible diversity of the Andes, from traditional villages and grazing valleys to glacial lakes and towering snow-capped peaks. The journey concludes at Chavín de Huántar, one of the most important archaeological sites in South America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing a perfect blend of trekking and cultural exploration.

Itinerary
Day 1: Huaraz – Olleros – Sacracancha Camp
After an early breakfast, depart from Huaraz and drive to the traditional Andean village of Olleros (3,450 m / 11,319 ft), the starting point of the trek. Follow an ancient pre-Inca trail through scenic valleys, agricultural terraces, and highland communities while enjoying views of the Cordillera Blanca.
The trail gradually ascends across open grasslands and mountain landscapes until reaching Sacracancha Camp, where the trekking team prepares dinner and overnight accommodation.
Day 2: Sacracancha – Yanashallash Pass – Shongo Camp
Today’s hike is the most challenging and rewarding of the trek. The trail climbs steadily toward Yanashallash Pass (4,700 m / 15,420 ft), the highest point of the route. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of glaciated peaks, remote valleys, and the rugged landscapes of the Cordillera Blanca.
After reaching the pass, descend into the eastern side of the Andes, entering a greener environment characterized by high-altitude wetlands and pastoral landscapes. Continue to Shongo Camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Shongo – Chavín de Huántar – Huaraz
After breakfast, continue descending through traditional Andean landscapes toward Chavín de Huántar, one of Peru’s most important archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Upon arrival, enjoy a guided visit to the ancient ceremonial center of the Chavín civilization, including its impressive stone architecture, plazas, galleries, and the famous Lanzón Monolith. After the tour, return by private transport to Huaraz.
